What is menopause?
Medically speaking a period of 1 year without menses after the age of 40 is considered to be menopause.


What is the average age of menopause?
Menopause occurs between 45 to 50 years but the average age is 47 years.


Menopausal symptoms--

  • Menstrual--Menstruation can either stop suddenly or there is gradual decrease in the amount of flow or there is gradual increase in the spacing between the periods.
  • Cardiovascular--The commonest & the most noticeable symptoms are hot flushes & sweating. The flushes start on the face & the neck, last for about 2 minutes & are frequently followed by sweating. They are often worse at night.
  • Menopausal backache, joint pain,osteoarthritis are also known.
  • Urinary-- burning at micturition,stress incontinence.

  • Genital tract--vagina becomes dry, senile vaginitis is common.

What is post menopausal bleeding?--
Bleeding occurring at any time after 6 months of absence of menses should be investigated.
Also if a woman above the age of 52 continues to menstruate then it should be investigated.
