IDDM is a type of DM which is Insulin dependent i.e. it will always require insulin for its management.

What is the cause of IDDM?--

In patients Of IDDM; a genetic tendency does exist. Some environmental insult in these predisposed individuals (such as viral infections )initiate an autoimmune process wherein the pancreatic cells are recognized by body as foreign cells. Hence an immune response is developed against the pancreatic cells. This leads to destruction of the pancreatic cells & eventual diabetes. By the time the patient manifests full fledged diabetes; almost 90% cells are already destroyed.

At what age does IDDM manifest?--

Generally IDDM occurs in a much younger age group.
