Stages of HIV infection  ---

HIV infection leads to a broad spectrum of disease of which AIDS is the last, most severe stage.

HIV infection has the following stages -

1) Asymptomatic stage -----
After exposure, HIV remains in the blood stream without any symptoms for years. During this period he remains absolutely healthy.

2) PGL stage
This is the phase of bodily response against the infection. The lymph glands in the body are enlarged. Commonly affected lymph glands are the ones in the armpit & the neck.

3)ARC (AIDS Related Complex) stage ---
This is the stage of appearance of opportunistic infections.

Symptoms include ----

Exhausted feeling
Persistent cough with expectoration
Fever off & on often with night sweats
Persistent diarrhoea
Weight loss for no obvious reason.
Mouth infections

***** However these symptoms may be caused due to other causes also & are not diagnostic of AIDS *****

4) AIDS
This is the last phase of the disease. It includes serious opportunistic infections, secondary cancers or HIV related involvement of the brain.
