Initially single drugs were used , but was soon found to lead to emergence of resistance to the drug in HIV.
Hence now regimes using combinations of drugs is advocated.
 

How is the drug effect monitored ?--
The disease state & the effect of drugs is monitored using CD4 counts & viral load.
Both these estimations are done twice 2-4 weeks apart before initiation of treatment.
Later these are repeated at 2-4 weeks & 10--12 weeks following the treatment.
If the viral load is not decreased by about 3 fold at 10--12 weeks after the initiation of treatment, the therapy needs to be reviewed for drug resistance & changing/adding new drugs.

Is there any effective medicine for AIDS in ayurveda, homeopathy or other traditional medicine forms ?--
NO. No curative drug has been found for HIV in any form of medicine as of now. Any individual claiming to have a cure should be asked to prove it scientifically.

Are there any vaccines for HIV ?--
The research is going across the globe to develop a vaccine for HIV. However the ability of HIV to change its coat during replication  & also its property of crippling the immune system has posed problems in developing the vaccine.
