What causes herpes zoster? --
It is caused by varicella zoster virus. The virus is the same as the that causes chicken pox. It remains dormant in the body & is reactivated to cause herpes zoster.

What are the symptoms? --
Vesicular eruptions on the body.
In otherwise normal person this eruption does not cross the midline.
The eruption can also occur on the face, mouth, ear, eye, tongue. The lesions are often associated with pain.

Total duration--
7-10 days. Skin returns to normal within 2-4 weeks.

Complications--
Most common is pain during the attack & after the attack.

Treatment--
Drugs like acyclovir, famcyclovir accelerate healing as well as decrease the incidence of the pain.
