**Who are the candidates?--

  • Persons suffering from genetic diseases.
  • Affected relatives in the family.
  • One affected child.

Genetic diseases are especially common in communities in which consanguinous (within the family) marriages are common.

** Counseling--

Diagnosis is confirmed.

Family history of diseases.

From the above risk of having an affected child is determined i.e. if the female is pregnant chance (%) that the newborn will be affected one.

Once the risk for newborn is known; informed reproductive decisions can be taken.

If the woman is already pregnant then various prenatal methods to find out whether the child is affected can be used.

GENE THERAPY--

This modality is still in it's very early stages.

  • Cells from the body such as bone marrow are removed, then infected with virus & reintroduced.
  • The viruses are thus introduced in the body.

These viruses carry the functional gene to replace/supplement activity of the resident defective gene.
