Fibroids are benign masses of fibrous tissue & smooth muscle cells.

SYMPTOMS--

• Increased blood loss & pain during the periods.
• At times they can cause blood loss outside the usual dates.
• Rarely they are the cause of infertility.
• Passage of clots during the periods.
• Some patients also complain of heavy feeling in the pelvis.
• Sudden & severe pain may be associated with complicated fibroids.

  Diagnosis--
  It can be done using ultrasonography.

  Treatment--

• Myomectomy-In this operation only the fibroid is removed; while the uterus is conserved.
• Hysterectomy-In this operation the uterus is removed.

Hysterectomy is done if--

Post menopausal lady with symptomatic fibroid.

Young lady only if the uterus is studded with fibroids.
