Treatment of Diabetes (mellitus)---

What is the treatment?--

For a case of IDDM, insulin is a must.

For a case of NIDDM; depending upon the blood sugar level --borderline cases can be managed with dietary regulations alone. Other cases require anti diabetic( oral hypoglycemic) drugs. Severe/complicated cases require insulin.

Guidelines for patients on insulin--

  1. Learn to take the insulin injections yourself-- it is really easy.
  2. Never miss a meal once you have taken an injection. This is so because the insulin injected will cause a decrease in the blood glucose. If there is no meal(glucose) to maintain the normal level of glucose then you may feel giddy & faint.
  3. Know what is hypoglycemia. This is the condition arising out of low blood sugar.( as described previously) If you can pick up its onset at the earliest remedial measures can be taken immediately.
  4. Always keep sugar, biscuits etc with you. Whenever you experience hypoglycemia, have it immediately to prevent any fainting attack.
  5. Never stop insulin on your own. Also do not change the insulin doses without the physician's advice.
  6. Stick to the insulin & meal schedules given to you by your physician.
  7. In case of any wound contact your physician rather than trying to manage it yourself. These injuries can be dangerous as if not properly managed can eventually lead to diabetic coma.
  8. Take care of your feet--Diabetic foot is common. Use well fitting shoes & put some dusting powder in your shoes.
  9. Any fever or illness--always contact your physician. Remember that any uncontrolled stress to the body can land you in diabetic coma
