Complications of Diabetes (mellitus)---

What are the complications?--

Diabetes has both immediate as well as long term complications. They are

Immediate complications--

  1. Diabetic ketoacidosis (Commonly called Diabetic coma)--seen mainly in IDDM. Can be fatal if not promptly treated.
  2. Hyperosmolar coma-- seen mainly in NIDDM

The long term complications are--

  1. Accelerated atherosclerosis-- This means increased incidence of ischemic heart disease.( for meaning of atherosclerosis refer to On Line Dictionary)
  2. Diabetic Nephropathy-- There is progressive deterioration of renal function.. may ultimately end up with renal failure.
  3. Diabetic neuropathy--The peripheral nerves are involved with long standing diabetes.
  4. Diabetic foot-- This is due to neuropathy as well as due to increased susceptibility to infections.
  5. Diabetic retinopathy-- Even the eyes are not spared by the diabetic process. May lead to sudden blindness.
