Diabetes is a condition caused by relative/absolute deficiency of Insulin.

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas & is required for maintenance of normal glucose levels. Hence Diabetes manifests as raised blood glucose levels.

What level of blood sugar is considered to be diabetic?--

1. Fasting venous plasma glucose-- >140 mg/dl on at least 2 separate occasions.
2. Post prandial-- Venous plasma glucose > 200 mg/dl at 2 hours & on at least one other occasion during the 2 hour test.

What are the types of Diabetes?--

There are mainly 2 types--

• IDDM- Insulin Dependent D.M.
• NIDDM- Non Insulin Dependent D.M.
