Why are steroids used in asthma ? Asthma is a condition caused due to abnormally high sensitivity of the airways to many factors. This abnormal sensitivity causes the airways to narrow down when subjected to these factors. Steroids are the best drugs to control this abnormal sensitivity & hence also the symptoms. Are these the same steroids that are used by athletes to improve their performance ? No. The steroids that are used in Asthma are corticosteroids. The ones used by the athletes are anabolic steroids. Do steroids have serious side effects ? Yes. Steroids taken orally for long periods do have serious side effects. Hence they should always be taken under medical supervision. What are inhaled steroids ? Inhaled steroids are the ones taken using an inhaler or such devices. These steroids act at the exact site of the problem i.e. the airways. Minimal amounts of steroid is absorbed in the body from the airways. Thus the side effects of the steroids on the other body systems is prevented. Do steroids cause osteoporosis ? Yes. Steroids are known to cause osteoporosis. However when inhaled steroids are used, this side effects is very less likely. What precaution should one take while using inhaled steroids ? After using the inhalation; always gargle with water. This eliminates the steroids deposited in the mouth. These steroids if not removed can cause fungal infection in the mouth. |
